DILI, 19 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, sworn in Timor-Leste’s new ambassador to the United States, Jose Luis Guterres at the Presidential Palace.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, José Luís Guterres said he has been directly appointed by the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, to represent Timor-Leste in the US, pledging to strengthen Timor-Leste’s bilateral relations with the US.
“I will carry out my diplomatic mission accordingly in order to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries,” said Ambassador Guterres.
Horta urged Ambassador Guterres to show generosity and dedication by establishing good relations with the US, asking Guterres to show good professional performance for TL’s success.
Guterres will replace Chargé d’Affaires, Antonito de Araújo to represent Timor-Leste in Washington D.C.
Previously, Ambassador Jose Luis Guterres also served as Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to the United States.
Jose Luis Guterres has also served as Deputy Prime Minister, Member of the National Parliament, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK), and Chairman of the Special Administrative Region Authority of Oé-Cusse Ambeno (RAEOA).
