DILI, 24 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The Central Bank of Timor-Leste (BCTL) has released the names of 31 social media accounts that spread scams.
BCTL warns social media users to avoid scams on social media including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Email, Websites, and so on.
Such scams are often conducted online and with operations based overseas, tricking people into paying initial capital or membership fees.
According to BCTL, scammers may use social media, email, and websites to disseminate bogus job opportunities or disguise themselves as a real company promising large amounts of money and so on.
“Scammers often ask social media users to send money first in order to receive the promised large sum,” the statement said.
To prevent Timorese social media users from being scammed, the BCTL has revealed 31 social media accounts that have been spreading scams in the country, namely Timortimorbaimwong, Timor-Leste Gift Info, Superimorleste, Gifts For Timor-Leste, Rans Intertainment Indonesia, Latest Timor-Leste Info 2023, Timor-Leste Forum, Arum Asaluna, Maria, Sultan khalid Al Fahd, Adrian Miguel Pools, Linu da Cruz, Satrio Cheng Pools, Chairul Cheng Pools, Hj Abah Yusuf, Kyal H Yusuf, Andre Amaral, Maubere foholeten, Thlanchal Mahasiri, Mandarin Motor, Buy and sell quality used motorcycles specifically for Timor-Leste, BUrSa Used Motorcycle, Hj Yusuf, Raffi Nagita 1717, ghoib money, Leader 4d/6d, Mary Barra, Lee Wang Toto, and ATO YUSUP.
The BCTL will find victims who have been scammed and sent money to an unknown source.
BCTL calls on these victims to come forward and inform the BCTL about their experiences of being scammed.
The BCTL urged social media users not to send money to unknown sources and to avoid giving out the details of their bank account, ATM, ID cards, etc.
