DILI, 07 March 2025 (TATOLI) – In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, World Vision Timor-Leste (WVTL), in partnership with the Fundasaun Esperansa Enklave Oecusse (FEEO), and Forum Komunikasaun ba Feto Timor Lorosa’e (FOKUPERS), is hosting a three-day market event from 6-8 March 2025 to highlight the role of women in economic development. Organized through the EU-funded project, “Promotion of Women through Economic Empowerment and Rights (POWER)”, this fair provides a platform for women entrepreneurs from Covalima and Oecusse to showcase their products, share business ideas, and connect with potential buyers, investors, and partners.
Speaking at the launch event, Jared Berends, National Director of World Vision Timor-Leste, emphasized the significance of empowering women economically, “When women thrive, communities prosper. Through the POWER project, we are equipping women with the tools, resources, and networks they need to succeed in business and decision-making. Today’s event is a celebration of their resilience, creativity, and leadership. We believe that investing in women is key to building a more inclusive and prosperous Timor-Leste.”
The European Union, donor of the POWER project, reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality and economic empowerment. EU Ambassador to Timor-Leste Marc Fiedrich stated, “We hope to see stronger recognition of women’s contributions to economic growth, increased support for their businesses and most importantly a sense of community empowerment that will drive them forward. To all the women here today—you are not just shaping your businesses; you are shaping the future of Timor-Leste.”
Highlighting the government’s role in advancing gender equality, Jose do Rosario, National Director for the Development of Gender Equality at the Secretary of State for Equality and Inclusion, expressed gratitude to World Vision and its partners for organizing the event, as well as to the European Union for its unwavering support of the government and people of Timor-Leste in promoting gender equality. “The government calls on all parties to join hands in supporting women in Timor-Leste,” he stated.
The event features exhibitions of local agricultural products, artisanal crafts, and culinary specialties, alongside interactive discussions on women’s health, financial access, and business development. By fostering networking and knowledge-sharing, the initiative aims to increase public awareness of gender equality and create sustainable economic opportunities for women.
This year’s celebration brings together representatives from government agencies, financial institutions, media, and community organizations. The event not only raises visibility for women-led businesses but also strengthens their participation in the formal economy.
World Vision Timor-Leste remains committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Timor-Leste. The POWER project, funded by the European Union, is a key initiative in supporting vulnerable women to seek entrepreneurial opportunities, improve their livelihoods, and play a greater role in household and community decision-making.
