DILI, 30 january 2024 (TATOLI) – Eighteen lecturers from Timor-Leste’s public and private universities have completed a six-week Education Training Program organized by the international non-governmental organization from South Korea, known as the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL).
One of the trainees, João Maia, Director of the Department of International Relations of the UNPAZ University, stressed the importance of training which is crucial for the transformation of the mindset of the new generations.
“Education plays a crucial role in changing the mentality of young people. I believe that one day our young people will be aware of the essence of peace and will avoid violent acts,” Joáo Maia told Tatoli, in Dili
He said that the new generations can change their mindset gradually by adopting new behaviors, thoughts, and feelings through education that seems to work for them.
Maia also said that the training made him consider the importance of integrating the discipline of peace into the curriculum of the Department of International Relations at UNPAZ University.
He added that the group of trainees intends to organize various activities, inviting, for example, representatives of civil society, the church, and local authorities to share their experiences with the students on the values of peace.
HWPL trainer Oliver Kim explained that the training focused on promoting peace and social harmony. “Now that the training is over, I hope that the trainees will pass on what they have learned to their students,” he said.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture, José Honório, highlighted the importance of the training in promoting peace and social harmony in the country, asking HWPL to continue providing this training in order to reach a greater number of university lecturers.
These 18 lecturers are from the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), UNPAZ University, Oriental University (UNITAL), Dili University (UNDIL), Institute of CRISTAL, Institution of Health Science (ICS), Institute of Philosophy (ISFIT), and Naroman Esperanza Lauala Institution (NELI).
