DILI, 30 january 2024 (TATOLI) – Victims of the windstorm that struck Mulo village in Ainaro Municipality on monday, january 22, expressed gratitude for the support provided by President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta.

More than 1,600 people from 372 households were impacted as a windstorm damaged homes and property on the second day of heavy rain.

Initial assessments indicate 10 houses were severely damaged and 20 sustained moderate damage. The numbers may rise as verification continues.

After seeing images and information shared on social media, President Horta swiftly responded by sending his Civil Society and Social Inclusion team to the site to assess needs and provide emergency assistance. Basic necessities were supplied with the President’s support.

Though the aid helped victims in the immediate aftermath, the affected community noted more is required to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods. The village chief appealed for additional government help to reconstruct permanent housing.

“We are deeply thankful for the prompt assistance from President Horta. This has helped relieve some of our burden,” said Rosalina de Jesus, a windstorm victim in Mulo village whose home was destroyed and who is currently sheltering in makeshift quarters. “We need support to help to rebuild our houses and recover our lives.”
