DILI, 04 March 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of External Affairs of India has announced that Shri Madan Kumar Ghildiyal, presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the new Ambassador of India to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

In a statement published on the website of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is mentioned that Ambassador Ghildiyal is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

India and Timor-Leste share warm and friendly relations based on a common commitment to democracy and pluralism, said Indian President Droupadi Murmu during a meeting with President Horta, in Dili, last year,

During the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – India meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit held in September 2023, in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced the decision to establish an Indian Embassy in the capital of Timor-Leste, Dili.

This decision is part of a 12-point plan for India’s relations with the region, presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to strengthen cooperation and diplomatic ties in the East Asian region. This plan covers various issues, from connectivity to digital public infrastructure and actions to tackle terrorism.

Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “this decision reflects the importance that India attaches to ASEAN and its relations with Timor-Leste”. It adds that “Timor-Leste and the members of ASEAN have warmly welcomed the decision”.
