DILI, 31 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The Presidency of the Republic has provided emergency aid to families affected by the windstorm in the municipality of Ermera, following the recent heavy rains and windstorms.
On tuesday, the families of the six houses damaged as a result of the heavy rains and windstorms in the villages of Hatuleta and Leguimea, in the municipality of Ermera, received emergency aid from the office of the President of the Republic, including rice, cooking oil, cooking pots, frying pans, plates, spoons, biscuits, spring beds, and blankets, among other things.
After seeing the images and information shared on social media, President Horta responded through his Civil Society and Social Affairs team to go to the site, assess the needs of the disaster-affected families and provide emergency assistance, primarily basic necessities.
While these basic needs already helped the victims in the short term, the affected community said more would be needed to rebuild homes and recover their lives, as the victim families were saddened that so far they had not received any assistance from the Government.
“We are very grateful for the immediate assistance from President Horta. This has helped us to somewhat ease our burden,” said Maria Amelia Pereira, a victim in Leguimea whose house was destroyed during the recent windstorms,
“We ask above all for the government to not just help us with emergency relief but also provide construction material to rebuild our homes destroyed by the windstorm.”
Pereira urged the government to also provide emergency assistance to the other victims.
