MALFF to distribute 25 new farm tractors to municipalities to boost crop production

DILI, 01 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Forestry (MALFF) has purchased ne25 new farm tractors to support local farmers in boosting crop productivity to meet the national needs for feed and food.

Ribeiro said that MALFF allocated US$848,000 for the purchase of these tractors.

The National Director of Agriculture and Horticulture, Lúcio Ribeiro, said that these tractors will soon be distributed to municipal agricultural technicians to support farmers in agricultural production.

“These tractors will be distributed to municipalities that have the potential to produce various crops, including Bobonaro, Covalima, Manufahi, Viqueque, Baucau, Manatuto, and Oe-Cusse,” he said.

He said that once the growing season is over, these tractors will be returned to Dili for maintenance.

In order to help farmers increase local agricultural production, the Ministry of Agriculture has planned to buy 25 more farm tractors this year.

The government has allocated US$240,000 for the maintenance of these tractors and another US$225,000 for the purchase of the parts of tractors for maintenance.

More than 30 tractor drivers will be recruited to operate these tractors.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, Marcos da Cruz, said that the aim of distributing these tractors to the municipalities is to help farmers cultivate more abandoned farmland to increase the production of rice, corn, and many other local crops.

According to Ribeiro, the government will also purchase 200 hand tractors to help farmers cultivate their crops.
