DILI, 12 march 2024 (TATOLI) – The representative of Waseda University in Japan, Mitsuru Yamada, in a meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, presented his university’s commitment to establishing a Japanese Studies Centre in Timor-Leste to engage young Timorese who are interested in Japan.
“We discussed about how we can support young people to promote peace and stability,” said Yamada.
He said that the Japanese Study Center would support young Timorese to explore, discover and gain more knowledge in order to contribute to the country’s national development.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Gusmão was delighted and welcomed the idea of establishing a Japanese Studies Centre in Timor-Leste.
Meanwhile, Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Japan, Ilidío Ximenes da Costa said that Mitsuru Yamada is an old friend of Gusmão and they have met before to share about the progress made by Timor-Leste’s youth.
“Wadesa University is committed to establishing a Japanese Studies Centre at National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL),” he said.
Last year, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão met with two old friends, former Japanese Ambassador to Timor-Leste Iwao Kitahara and Mitsuru Yamada at the 50th Anniversary of the Friendship and Cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Japan.
