DILI, 03 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, appreciated the Cuban doctors who continue to provide medical services to the people of Timor-Leste who need health care.
The Cuban Medical Brigade has provided vital healthcare services and training to Timor-Leste over the past two decades.
In his commemorative remarks, the President reflected on the longstanding health sector collaboration between the two nations that began since Timor-Leste’s independence.
President Ramos-Horta’s remarks underscored the deep appreciation for this enduring cooperation between the two nations.
He recalled that Cuba sent its first medical doctors to Timor-Leste shortly after the country gained independence: “Up to 700 Timorese medical students were sent to study in Cuba at that time.”
The Head of the State highlighted Timor-Leste’s efforts to establish its own medical school, which began with the first government in 2002.
The President also acknowledged another successful partnership – the 2005 program to fight illiteracy in Timor-Leste with Cuban assistance that personally witnessed the progress on Atauro Island by President himself.
