DILI, 04 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, congratulated the newly elected President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, on his landslide victory in the 2024 Indonesian general elections on 14 february.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Timor-Leste, I am pleased to extend my congratulations on Your Excellency’s’ election as President of Indonesia,” Prime Minister Gusmão said in a statement.
In his congratulation messages, Gusmão said that: “Your overwhelming election win demonstrates the confidence that the Indonesian people have in your leadership and your vision for the future of your nation. I am confident that with your wisdom and experience, you will be an outstanding President and a significant regional and global leader.”
He said that the time of turmoil and change in international relations, Indonesia has a central role to play in promoting cooperation, tolerance, and peace: “Indonesia will also become a leading global economic power under your leadership which will help drive economic growth and prosperity in our region.”
“Timor-Leste and Indonesia enjoy a strong bilateral relationship of friendship and cooperation. Together our countries provide a global model for reconciliation and the transformative power of dialogue and trust. Indonesia is Timor-Leste’s largest trading partner and we have deep people-to-people links and cooperation across a wide range of areas. I know that under your leadership our bilateral relationship will further strengthen and I very much look forward to working with you on any issues of mutual interest,” said Gusmão.
With the election of Prabowo Subianto as the new President of Indonesia, Gusmão expressed his commitment to working with the Indonesian new leader to finalize the maritime boundaries between the two countries in the near future.
“One of our shared national priorities is the finalization of our maritime boundaries in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sen. This will provide certainty in regard to our sovereign rights and underpin the development of our marine economy and conservation efforts,” said Prime Minister. “Once again, congratulations on Your Excellency’s election victory. I wish you all the very best of success as President and for the bright future of your country.
Defence Minister Prabowo and his vice presidential running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, won a majority of votes on february 14, winning 59 percent, or more than 96 million votes, Aljazeera reported.
