DILI, 05 april 2024 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, in a letter, congratulated Luís Montenegro, on his appointment as the new Prime Minister of Portugal.
Gusmão considered Montenegro’s appointment “a significant achievement and a recognition of his commitment and dedication to the public interest.”
On behalf of the people and government of Timor-Leste, Prime Minister Gusmão wished Montenegro “every success”, expressing his desire and willingness to work and strengthen the historic bonds of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation that unite the two nations.
He said “Portugal is a brother country and has always been a steady partner in Timor-Leste’s state-building process.
Prime Minister believed that the new Portuguese government would continue the “partnership for the defense of the highest democratic values and the promotion of common interest.”
Montenegro was born in Porto, on 16 february 1973. He is a lawyer, politician, and President of the Social Democratic Party.
Gusmão also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, for his work during his mandate as Prime Minister.
Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Antóno Costa’s visit to Timor-Leste on 25 july 2023, showing his commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.
