DILI, 22 July 2026 (TATOLI) — Portuguese singer-songwriter Luís Represas, a longtime supporter of Timor-Leste who was honoured with the country’s Medal of the Order of Timor-Leste, has died at the age of 69 following a prolonged illness.
The Embassy of Portugal in Dili announced his death on Wednesday, describing Represas as a committed friend of Timor-Leste whose support for the country’s struggle spanned decades. His solidarity was also expressed through his song Timor, which became associated with the Timorese cause.
In 2000, Represas joined an official Portuguese delegation to Timor-Leste led by then-President Jorge Sampaio, reflecting Portugal’s continued solidarity with the Timorese people during the country’s transition to independence.
In recognition of his longstanding commitment and support, former President Taur Matan Ruak awarded Represas the Medal of the Order of Timor-Leste, one of the nation’s highest state honours.
Represas leaves a lasting musical legacy and a deep bond with Timor-Leste, a country he supported throughout its struggle for self-determination and beyond.
