DILI, 10 april 2024 (TATOLI) – Muslim Community in Timor-Leste celebrated, on Wednesday, Idul Fitri, also known as Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Ramadan fasting.

In an interview with Tatoli, the vice-president of the Islamic Council of Timor-Leste, Abdullah Inácio, explained that Idul Fitri is an occasion to renew faith and free oneself from sin, temptation, and evil.

“Eid al-Fitr is a day of victory and happiness for Muslims and the world,” said Abdullah Inácio, at the Annur Mosque in Dili.

He said on the Idul Fitry day, families usually start the day with morning prayers at home or at a nearby mosque. This is followed by lunch with family and friends, during which they reflect on the previous month of Ramadan. It is also customary for families to exchange gifts and make donations to the most vulnerable at this time.

It should be remembered that last year the Muslim community distributed basic necessities to the needy families in Lautem, Baucau, Viqueque, Manufahi, Ainaro and Liquica.

According to the 2022 population census, of the 1.4 million inhabitants, 97.57 percent are Catholics, 1.96 percent Protestants, 0.24 percent Muslims, and a very small percentage of other religions.
