Timor-Leste registers monthly deflation of 0,2% in march

DILI, 18 march 2024 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste National Institute of Statistics, I.P. (INETL, I.P) revealed that the data collected last march in the country when compared to the previous month, indicate that the country registered deflation of around 0,2%, compared to a rise of 0.2% in the previous month.

“The significant fall of the Alcohol and Tobacco (-1.3%), Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-0.3%), Transports (-0.1%), Health (-0.7%) and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.1%),” according to INETL. 

The largest offsetting movement came from the Recreation and Culture (+0.2%) groups.   The 12-month Tradeable CPI rate stood at +3.7%, with the Non-Tradeable rate a rice +0.3%.

The largest upward contributions to the change in the one-month CPI rate (-0.2%) between March 2024 and February 2024, came from:

Alcohol and Tobacco (-1.3%): was driven by the Tobacco (-1.7%) subgroup.

Furnishing, Household Equipment, and Routine Household Maintenance (-0.3): was driven by Household Furniture and Textiles (-1.2%) and Goods and Services for Routine Household Maintenance (-0.2%).

Transports (-0.1%): was driven by the Operation of Personal Transport Equipment (-0.1%).

Health (-0.7%): was driven by Medical Products, Appliances, and Equipment (-0.7%)

Food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.1%): which was significantly driven by Milk, Cheese, and Eggs (-1.4%), Rice (-0.1%), Fish and Seafood (-0.6%), Food Products (-0.3%), Vegetables (-0.5%) and Mineral Waters, Soft Drinks, Fruit and Vegetable Juices (-0.1%) subgroups. The largest offsetting movement came from Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery (+1.2%), Coffee, Tea and Cocoa (+0.7%), Oil and Fats (+0.2%), and Fruits (+0.5%) subgroups.

Housing (+0.1%): was driven by Maintenance and Repair of the Dwelling (+0.3%).

In the other part, the largest offsetting movement came from:

Recreation and Culture (+0.2%): was driven by the Audio-Visual, Photographic, and Information Processing Equipment (+3.0%) subgroup.

Latest figure and long-term trend 

The CPI 12-month rate between march 2024 and march 2023 stood at +2.7%, meaning that a basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in march 2023 would have cost $100.27 in march 2024.  The All Groups CPI (+2.7%) through the year ending march 2024. The largest driver of the rise in the annual came from Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages  (+5.4%) group, which was driven by Rice (+20.9%), Vegetables (+6.5%), Fish and Seafood (+0.5%), Mineral Waters, Soft Drinks, Fruit and Vegetable Juices (+8.7%), Fruits (+1.2%), and Food Products (+4.2%) subgroups. The largest offsetting movement came from Oil and Fats (-9.2%), Milk, Cheese and Eggs (-2.6%), Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery (-1.0%), Meats (-0.8%), Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa (-0.6%) and Bread and Cereals (-1.0%) subgroups. The Education (+2.0%), and Recreation and Culture (+1.6%) groups.  The largest offsetting movement came from Alcohol and Tobacco (-0.4%), Transports (-2.3%), Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (-2.7%), Housing (-0.6%), Communication (-0.2%), Clothing and Footwear (-0.1%) and Health (-0.7%) groups.
