President Horta to attend 50th Anniversary of Carnation Revolution in Lisbon

DILI, 22 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, begins a trip to Portugal and the United States from april 23 to 30, 2024.

From april 23 to 28, the President will be in Portugal to participate in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

The 1974 military coup ended the authoritarian Estado Novo regime and paved the way for the independence of Portugal’s overseas territories, including Timor-Leste.

During his stay in Portugal, President Horta will meet with the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the National Assembly, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Luís Montenegro.

The Head of State will travel to New Jersey on april 29, and will deliver this year’s commencement speech at Rutgers University on april 30, titled: “Lessons on War and Peace from a Village in Southeast Asia.”

President Horta holds an Honorary Doctorate from Rutgers University.

The Head of State’s overseas trip will conclude on may 1 when he departs the United States. He will return to Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, on may 3.

The Carnation Revolution in Portugal 50 years ago was an important moment that allowed for Timor-Leste’s independence after centuries of Portuguese rule.

Horta’s trips mark this historic event as well as his academic achievement being honored by Rutgers University in the United States.
