New agricultural technology boosts rice production in Vemasse

DILI, 15 may 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta participated in the Rice Harvesting ceremony in Vemasse, Baucau, organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCITL).

This event showcased new agricultural technology recently introduced in collaboration with Indonesian authorities.

The role of modern technology, such as rice farming tractors and rice drying tractors, is crucial to improving rice production in East Timor.  

Horta expressed his joy at the positive results of this new technology, noting it has already been implemented in areas like Maliana with significantly increased production levels.

“This new method proves that we can boost agricultural production in Timor-Leste,” said the President.

Horta said: “Today, the information shared demonstrates that our agricultural sector has great potential not just for rice, but also crops like sorghum and beans as we now strive to achieve food self-sufficiency within the country.”

The Head of State advocated for strategic infrastructure planning to support a vision of agricultural development, with rice productivity as an initial success story.

The President hopes the knowledge shared by the speakers can be disseminated throughout communities across the nation.

Horta was accompanied by CCITL President Jorge Serrano, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Fisheries Marcos da Cruz, the President of Baucau Municipal Authority President, local entrepreneur Rui Castro, and other participants.

The participation of the President of the Republic at the ceremony demonstrated his optimism about the development of modernized agricultural practices helping to drive sustainable economic growth and food security for this young nation.
