DILI, 16 may 2024 (TATOLI) – The Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Hassanal Bolkiah, is scheduled to arrive in Timor-Leste, on may 20, where he will attend the celebrations of the 22nd anniversary of the country’s Restoration of Independence, which will take place on the same day.

The presence of such a respected leader is a testament to the strong relationship between Timor-Leste and Brunei.

Earlier this week, President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Timor-Leste, Wan Hadfi Lutfan to discuss specific preparations for the upcoming visit of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

The Acting Minister of Education, Domingos Lopes Lemos said that thousands of students would be gathered to welcome Hassanal Bolkiah in the country.

He said that Hassanal Bolkiah would be warmly welcomed by the students along the street, from his arrival at Dili Airport to the Presidential Palace.

Brunei was one of the first nations to recognize Timor-Leste after its restoration of independence from Indonesia in 2002 through a long struggle.

The diplomatic relations between the two nations have remained close and going from strength to strength.

The Independence Day celebrations on may 20th will feature a parade, cultural performances, and other festivities around the flag-raising ceremony, including the bestowing of honors upon individuals who have contributed to the development of the nation.
