JSRWP presents roadmap on improving justice sector to Council of Ministers

DILI, 05 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The coordinator of the Justice Sector Reform Working Group (JSRWP), Lúcia Lobato presented an action plan on improving the justice sector to the Council of Ministers. 

The presentation took place during the meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Government Palace in Dili.

The Justice Sector Reform Working Group presented a roadmap for improving the justice sector, outlining priorities, and identifying a set of recommendations and measures for the Government to adopt to strengthen the judicial system.

The Council of Ministers discussed the recommendations presented and reiterated its support for the Justice Sector Reform Working Group to continue its work to adopt the necessary reforms.

Earlier, after presenting the JSRWP report to the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão, Lobato said that one of the report’s recommendations is to invest in the training of judges.

She stressed that investing in the training of judges is crucial to strengthen human resources development in Timor-Leste’s justice sector.

According to Lobato, the report also emphasised the importance of improving the judicial infrastructure.

Lobato added that the status of the courts of first instance in Dili, Baucau, Covalima and Oé-Cusse also needed to be reviewed, as well as improving the infrastructure of the Legal and Judicial Training Centre.
