DILI, 13 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The Japanese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Kimura Tetsuya, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Benedito Freitas, signed an agreement on the project for the Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).

Ambassador Kimura said that with this agreement, the Japanese government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has made one million US dollars available for eight Timorese civil servants to pursue their master’s degree at Japanese universities.

“We believe that the program is a valuable opportunity for young Timorese to acquire specialized knowledge and establish personal relationships with young leaders from other Asian nations who are studying in Japan. This experience will be invaluable not only for their personal journeys but also for the future of the country,” said Kimura at MoFAC’s hall, in Dili.

He said that in addition to investing in the training of Timorese human resources since the restoration of Timor-Leste’s independence, Japan has also supported the construction of infrastructure for the health, education, and agriculture sectors.

Minister Freitas highlighted the importance of the JDS program, as it allows civil servants to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees at Japanese universities in areas such as technology, urban and environmental development, agricultural engineering, etc.

Since 2018, the program has funded master’s and doctoral courses for 46 civil servants from various ministries.
