DILI, 24 june 2024 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament (PN) elected Rui Pereira dos Santos as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC), for a four-year term.

According to House Speaker, Maria Fernanda Lay, Santos was elected with 41 votes in favor, zero abstentions, and four against.

Lay thanked the MPS for their contribution to the election of the head of the CAC.

MP Armando Lopes, from the Democratic Party benches, stressed the need to elect the head of the CAC in order to guarantee the functioning of the institution, asking the new commissioner to take up the post responsibly.

Meanwhile, the FRETILIN bench considered that the election of the new leader of the CAC is very important and will certainly contribute to the fight against corruption. However, FRETILI decided not to participate in the election because “the candidate proposed by the government did not meet the legal requirements according to article 8, line 2 of the CAC law, which states that the candidate for the position of commissioner must recognize his independence and impartiality at the same level”.

It’s recalled that PN had approved the government’s request for an urgent discussion of the proposal to amend the CAC law. The vote resulted in the removal of the requirement that at least three-quarters of MPs in office be present, thus allowing the CAC Commissioner to be elected or removed by an absolute majority.
