DILI, 08 july 2024 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta has extended a formal invitation to Angolan President João Lourenço to visit Timor-Leste.
The invitation was made during President Horta’s three-day official visit to Angola, which began on monday, july 8, 2024.
“The invitation aims to strengthen bilateral ties and address the need for reciprocity in high-level diplomatic exchanges. President Lourenço acknowledged that while this is Ramos-Horta’s second visit to Angola, no Angolan president has yet visited Timor-Leste. He expressed willingness to rectify this imbalance and instructed diplomatic channels to work on determining a suitable date for the visit,” said in a statement.
This invitation comes as the two nations signed three important cooperation agreements during Ramos-Horta’s visit. These cover bilateral political consultations, visa exemptions for diplomatic and service passports, and cooperation between their respective diplomatic academies.
The proposed visit by President Lourenço to Timor-Leste is expected to further enhance collaboration between the two countries, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, and trade. It also presents an opportunity to explore how Timor-Leste’s upcoming membership in the Asian Economic Organization could benefit CPLP partners, including Angola.
