DDILI, 20 august 2024 (TATOLI) – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Dili, to provide grant aid of up to 3.093 billion yen (approximately USD 20 million) for the Project for the Improvement of Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV).

The grant agreement was signed between Santina José Rodrígues Ferreira Viegas Cardoso, Minister of Finance and Mimpei Ito, JICA Chief Representative.

The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Finance and attended by Tetsuya Kimura, Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste; and Elia dos Reis Amaral, Minister of Health.

The objective of the Project is to strengthen the capacity of service delivery and improve the quality of medical services of Guido Valadares National Hospital, the only tertiary level hospital in the country, by constructing the facilities and providing related medical equipment, thereby contributing to the improvement of health system in Timor-Leste.

Upon the signing of the agreement, detailed design will be conducted in the next several months, and it is expected that the construction will start in the middle of 2025 which will last approximately 21 months.

The project includes the construction of a 4-floor new building for outpatient department, operating theaters, the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), the Labor and Delivery Department, and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

It is expected that the new building will be connected to the new Pediatric and ICU building, which is currently under construction by the Ministry of Health, to improve efficiency and patient safety in emergency medical services. This new project is formulated and implemented in alignment with the Master Plan of Guido Valadares National Hospital of the Government of Timor-Leste.
