DILI, 27 august 2024 (TATOLI) – Associação de Informacão e Tecnologia Progressiva de Timor-Leste (ITP-TL) held the three-day training on tuesday with the theme “Communication in the Age of Social Media and Tech Platform,” which took place on 27 to 29 august at Fundação Oriente, Dili.
Fernando Ximenes, Representative of ITP-TL, said the aim of the training, capacity building, and meeting is to strengthen the existing digital rights movement and empower the newly digital rights defenders through literacy training and roundtable discussion on digital rights and internet freedom.
“This capacity building focused on the development of media, journalism, freedom of expression, and digital rights,’’ Fernando Ximenes told reporters at Foundação Oriente, Bairo dos Grilhos, Dili, on tuesday.
Rigoberto Monteiro, Deputy Ombudsman of Human Rights (PDHJ), highlighted the development of media, journalist freedom of expression, and digital rights as the key issues in the development of the current media landscape in social media and digital tech, such as fake news, hate speech, cyberbullying, disinformation, misinformation, information disorder, access to information, content, user, audience, content modernization, community standards, community media, state, and corporate-running media.
“This will involve concrete analysis and a case in Timor-Leste in the region and the globe. This training also aims to connect the changing new media landscape and digitalization with other emerging issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism, data, climate issues, gender justice discourse, and digital safety; therefore, we ask participants to focus on the training to be implemented in Timor-Leste,’’ he said.
Furthermore, the PDHJ will recommend to the Government of Timor-Leste to facilitate all media, especially for the media ‘s construction in Timor-Leste.
Present at the training were the student from the National University of Timor, Loro Sa’e, several Timorese youths, and the staff of ITP-TL.
