DILI, 27 august 2024 (TATOLI) – The government, through the council minister, has decided to authorize the expenditure of US$16.5 million for the procurement of long-term service contracts on submarine fiber optic cables for a period of 17 years, from 2025 to 2041. This proposal was presented by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Miguel Manetelo.

According to government sources, this decision was based on the need to ensure a permanent reserve of internet bandwidth capacity and to guarantee the sustainable and efficient maintenance of the submarine fiber optic cable system.

“The fiber optic submarine cable network, which connects Dili to Darwin and Port Hedland in Australia, is a very important infrastructure for the technological development and economic diversification of the country. For the technical complex of landing stations to function properly, it is imperative to hire specialized services to ensure the continuous operation and maintenance of this system, thus contributing to widespread and efficient internet access throughout the country,” he concluded.
