DILI, 27 august 2024 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste, one of the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP) in Asia, is providing a donation to Portugal with an amount of $2.5 million.
The Council of Ministers approved the draft Government Resolution, presented by the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão, to allocate this donation, with the objective to support Madeira Island in Portugal, where it was affected by the fire.
“This fire, which started on 14 august in the mountains of the municipality of Ribeira Brava, quickly spread to the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Santana. The fire devastated more than 9,000 hectares of forest, which corresponds to more than 14% of the island’s forest area,” the executive said in an official statement that is accessed by TATOLI.
The Timorese’ government, in the spirit of solidarity and commitment to cooperation between peoples, according to the same source, emphasized that it is expressing its support for the Portuguese people and the population of the island of Madeira by making this donation to help recover from the damage caused by the fires.
