DILI, 20 september 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta attended the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at the Chinese Embassy in Dili.
In his speech, the President highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two nations and expressed gratitude for China’s continued support.
Recalling the historical ties dating back to the 1400s, President Horta emphasized China’s role as the first UN Security Council Permanent Member to recognize Timor-Leste’s sovereignty in 1975.
The Head of State also acknowledged China’s significant contributions to Timor-Leste’s development, including over CNY750 million in grants for infrastructure projects and crucial support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to the One China Policy and praised China’s diplomatic efforts in mediating international conflicts.
Looking ahead, Horta expressed optimism about increased Chinese investments following Timor-Leste’s anticipated ASEAN membership in 2025 and called for continued collaboration to address poverty and malnutrition in Timor-Leste.
Horta concluded his speech by toasting the enduring friendship between the two nations and the shared goal of peace and prosperity.
The event underscored the deepening ties between Timor-Leste and China, with both countries poised for enhanced cooperation in the coming years.
