DILI, 22 november 2024 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers approved the draft Government Resolution on the creation of a joint operational team between the FALINTIL-Timor-Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL) and the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL).
The objective of the approbation is to ensure the security, social stability, and well-being of the population during the official ceremonies commemorating the 49th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence, including the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.
The proposals were presented by the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Interior, Donaciano Gomes and Francisco Guterres.
“This resolution establishes patrol and surveillance operations in sensitive locations in all municipalities, preventing acts of social instability. The task force will be coordinated by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the Commander General of the PNTL, with the support of various government and institutional entities,” said in a document released by the government that is accessed by Tatoli.
According to the same source, the law in question also provides for more specific measures, such as the definition of chains of command, rules of engagement, and intelligence support, as well as the proportional use of force in accordance with the legislation in force. This task force will operate from 20 november 2024 to 5 january 2025.
