AHP’s Disaster READY Project celebrates key achievements and share lesson learnt to aid future project implementation

DILI, 25 november 2024 (TATOLI) – The Disaster READY Project (DRP) is a component of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership Programme (AHP). In Timor-Leste, the project is implemented through a consortium of five Australian NGOs led by CARE, including the HANAI consortium (represented by Caritas Australia), Oxfam in Timor-Leste, PLAN International in Timor-Leste and World Vision Timor-Leste, in collaboration with the Civil Protection Authority (CPA) and the national people with disabilities organisation, Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO).

The project meets every six months for a reflection workshop with stakeholders from local implementing partners, key DRP members, representatives of the Civil Protection Authority, representative from the Australian Government, local authorities from the project implementation areas, as well as representatives of DRP project participants.

This workshop aims to share key achievements, best practices, gaps and challenges since the last reflection workshop in Lautém in May 2024 and gather feedback and recommendations from stakeholders and program participants on ensuring effective project implementation.

In his opening speech, Excellency President of Civil Protection Authority, Jesuino dos Reis Matos Carvalho appreciates AHP Consortium for implementing Disaster READY Project and encourages Timorese to bring change to their communities.

First Secretary of Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste, Fiona Meehan, in her remarks expresses that Government of Australia, as a long-term partner with the Government of Timor Leste, is working together to achieve the goals and ambitions, to improve the well-being of the people and the nation of Timor-Leste in various sectors including how to ensure the resilient of communities.

And Fatima Estrela Soares from PLAN International and representative from Timor-Leste Disaster READY Country Committee (DRCC) in her speech emphasize DRCC to continue to appreciate the dedication, hard work and spirits in the community in working with Disaster READY Project. She adds to celebrates the successes and face the challenges together to strengthen the commitment to be resilient in effort to prepare for disaster.

Key partners who participated in the reflection workshop included CARE in Timor-Leste, Caritas Australia, Oxfam, PLAN International, World Vision, Child Fund, ADRA Timor-Leste, Church World Service (CWS), Raes Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO), Fundasaun – Knua Haberan Comunidade (F-KHC), Fundasaun Sosial Naroman (FUSONA), Sharis Haburas Comunidade (SHC), Kdadalak Sulimutuk Institute (KSI), Mata Dalan Institute (MDI), Masine Neo Oe-Cusse (MANEO), Bunibu Faef Nome (BIFANO), Maubisse Hametin Futuru (MAHARU), FRATERNA, HADEER, Grupu – Sistema Informasaun Geografia (G-SIG).

Through the Disaster READY project, the Government of Australia supports the community and government of Timor-Leste to improve disaster preparedness and response initiatives.

 In Timor-Leste, the Disaster READY project is a component of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP). It also works with the national organization for people with disabilities, Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO). And work with 15 implementing partners such Child Fund, ADRA Timor-Leste, Church World Service (CWS), Fundasaun – Knua Haberan Comunidade (F-KHC), Fundasaun Sosial Naroman (FUSONA), Sharis Haburas Comunidade (SHC), Kdadalak Sulimutuk Institute (KSI), Mata Dalan Institute (MDI ), Masine Neo Oe-Cusse (MANEO), Bunibu Faef Nome (BIFANO), A-FFOS, Maubisse Hametin Futuru (MAHARU), FRATERNA, Hametin Asaun Dezenvolvimento Edukasaun no Ekonomia Rural (HADEER), Grupu – Sistema Informasaun Geografia (G-SIG).

The main focus of this project is to build local partnerships and collaboration in disaster management to increase the collective impact of project interventions. To further build on the successes achieved in phase 1 of the Disaster READY project (January 2018 – June 2022), in the second phase (July 2022 – December 2026) the project will work to be ready to respond to new situations to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability for people at risk disasters and the impacts of climate change. An important element of this project is to maintain a strong focus on gender equality, disability issues and social inclusion.
