DILI, 27 november 2024 (TATOLI) – The European Union Delegation to Timor-Leste organised an event dedicated to all journalists and their important work in Timor-Leste.
“Journalist Talks: Challenges to Journalism in Timor-Leste” saw strong interest and participation with lively discussions about press freedom, ethics, technical innovations, training and legal frameworks.
Opening the event, Christoph Sorg, Deputy Head of Mission of the EU Delegation to Timor-Leste, underlined that “professional journalism is key for any functioning democracy and journalists have a crucial role for our societies. It is the journalists that provide the kind of information citizens need to make well-informed decisions for themselves and their communities. It is the journalists that give a voice to the voiceless and it is their drive for transparency that make powerful institutions more accountable”.
The panel discussion that followed with esteemed guest speakers including Otelio Ote, President of the Press Council, Prezado Ximenes, President of the Community Radio Association (ARKTL) and Antonia K. Martins (Diligente) provided for valuable insights into the current landscape of professional journalismin Timor-Leste. The experiences that the guest speakers shared highlighted the vital role of journalism in promoting democracy, transparency, and accountability.
The President of the Press Council expressed his appreciation for the Journalist Talks event organised by the European Union as it provided a platform for journalists and students to discuss the importance of good journalism and the increasing challenges that it faces in Timor-Leste and around the world.
