The 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations-UNAOC, under the theme “United for Peace: Restoring Trust, Reshaping the Future – Reflecting on Two Decades of Dialogue for Humanity,” takes place between november 25 and 27, 2024, at the Estoril Congress Center, Cascais.
The Forum, which celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the Alliance of Civilizations, is attended by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and dozens of Foreign Ministers and senior officials from various international organizations.
The official opening ceremony took place on the morning of November 26 and was attended by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, His Majesty the King of Spain, Philip VI, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, and the United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
President Marcelo Revelo de Sousa lamented that the world is marked by “intolerance and isolationism”. António Guterres warned that the continuation of several conflicts in the world is leading to “the erosion of trust in the multilateral system, in societies and in each country in the world”.
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warned that “everywhere it is imperative to defend the charter of the United Nations and international law, including the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all States”.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made it clear that only after the conflict in the Middle East has been resolved will it be possible to achieve “a lasting pact at the global level”, highlighting that “as long as tens of thousands of people, including innocent children, are killed in Gaza, there will be no peace in the alliance.”
