DILI, 05 december 2024 (TATOLI) – Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, has once again reaffirmed Malaysia’s full support for Timor-Leste’s accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.
Prime Minister Ibrahim made the statement at the joint conference during Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão’s official visit to Malaysia.
He said Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN was the main focus of his meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.
“We’re looking forward to their being embraced as a permanent member following year in 2025 when we chair ASEAN,” said Prime Minister Ibrahim in a statement on monady. “We’ll do whatever is necessary to assist Timor-Leste so that process can be further facilitated and accelerated.”
Timor-Leste began its bid for ASEAN membership in 2011, nine years after its independence in 2002.
