DILI, 10 december 2024 (TATOLI) – The Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ) was honored to participate as a guest speaker at the seminar titled “Promotion of Human Rights in the Economic Field and Valuation of Cultural Diversity in Timor-Leste.” Organized by the Faculty of Economics and Management at the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), the event marked Human Rights Day and aimed to highlight the intersection of economic policies and human dignity.

Delivering a presentation on “Protection of Human Rights in Economic Policy: Challenges and Solutions,” the Ombudsman emphasized the critical need to address poverty, malnutrition, and economic inequality. “Nearly 40% of our population lives below the poverty line, and 47% of children suffer from stunting,” the Ombudsman stated. “These figures highlight a failure in policy implementation. Leaders speak of children as the future, yet how can they thrive when their fundamental rights to health and nutrition are not met?” Drawing from international principles, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Ombudsman called for economic policies that guarantee human dignity, equality, and justice.

The Ombudsman praised the efforts of UNTL and the event organizers for promoting dialogue on these critical issues. “This seminar reflects our shared commitment to tackling inequality and valuing Timor-Leste’s cultural heritage,” the Ombudsman noted. Highlighting PDHJ’s role in safeguarding human rights, the Ombudsman reaffirmed that effective governance and public policies are essential to fulfilling the economic and cultural rights of all citizens. The seminar concluded with a call to action for policymakers to address structural challenges and ensure inclusive development for the prosperity of the Timorese people.
