DILI, 10 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) today launched a report on the feasibility study for the construction of public transport terminals in the municipalities of Dili, Baucau, Bobonaro, Covalima, Lautém, and Viqueque.
The report was launched by Vice-Prime Minister and Minister Coordinator for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu, and the Country Director of ADB to Timor-Leste, Stefania Dina.
In her speech, Stefania Dina said that the importance of public transport cannot be underestimated, as it is a vital lifeline for many Timorese, providing access to essential services such as education and healthcare.
She said that a reliable public transport system increases social equity and ensures that all citizens can participate fully in society, adding tt connects urban and rural areas, allowing for better interaction between communities.
Dina said that an efficient public transport system contributes to environmental sustainability.
She added that by reducing dependence on private vehicles, carbon emissions can be reduced and contribute to the fight against climate change.
Dina concluded her speech by reaffirming the ADB’s commitment to continuing to support the development of the country’s transport system, as this initiative not only promotes economic growth, but also guarantees inclusion, sustainability, and climate resilience in transport infrastructures.
Minister Manetelu stressed that the feasibility study is the first step towards improving the quality and accessibility of public transport in the country and emphasized that the ministry will submit the plan to the National Procurement Commission.
