DILI, 15 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The Authority of Inspection and Supervision of Economic, Sanitary, and Food Activities, I.P. (AIFAESA, I.P.) allocated US$250,000 to set up its Food Quality and Safety Testing Laboratory.

AIFAESA’s Inspector General, Odete da Silva Viegas, said that AIFAESA is going to renovate a building in the village of Tibar, in the municipality of Liquiçá, which will become AIFAESA’s Food Quality and Safety Testing Laboratory

“The renovation of the building is expected to take place this year,’ Viegas told Tatoli at her office in Dili, on tuesday.

She said that setting up a Food Quality and Safety Testing Laboratory would also involve purchasing food testing equipment and training AIFAESA’s staff members.

Viegas stressed that the Food Quality and Safety Testing Laboratory is essential for ensuring the safety, quality, and sustainability of food products in Timor-Leste, adding that the laboratory will help authorities to test and identify illegal addition of formalin to foods to extend their shelf-life which is detrimental to public health.

Food Quality and Safety Testing Laboratory is crucial for the country to test for a wide range of potential risks, including Toxins, Pathogens, Additives, Chemical residues, and Microbiological diseases.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has pledged to provide technical support to help AIFAESA accelerate the creation of the laboratory.

Last year, BPOM and AIFAESA held a historic meeting in Jakarta, where both institutions strengthened bilateral cooperation to support food supervision and laboratory development in Timor-Leste.

The meeting also highlighted a number of strategic programs that BPOM has undertaken to support AIFAESA, such as training for food inspectors and laboratory capacity building.
