DILI, 16 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The UNFPA Representative, Navchaa Suren, had a courtesy meeting with José Honório, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture to reaffirm UNFPA’s commitment to further strengthening the midwifery education in Timor-Leste.

During the meeting, Suren expressed her commitment to further strengthening the partnership between UNFPA and the Higher Education Ministry under her leadership.

The main discussion was about the critical roles that midwives play in providing quality care for women and newborns. Midwives save the lives of mothers and their newborns. Well-trained and skilled midwives can deliver 90% of sexual and reproductive health services. UNFPA and the Ministry of High Education are committed to further improving midwifery education through the standardization of the midwifery curriculum in line with global standards set by the World Health Organization and International Confederation of Midwives for three midwifery schools in Timor-Leste – namely (UNTL, ISC, and ICS).

Minister Honório expressed his full support for this initiative and looking forward to this strategic partnership with the UNFPA.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of completing the standardized curriculum within this year. “The standardized curriculum will ensure that midwifery schools produce future midwives equipped with the necessary clinical skills for providing comprehensive health care for women and newborns during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care.”

UNFPA is committed to improving midwifery education in Timor-Leste through initiatives such as building capacities of educators, curriculum development, skills training, and provision of basic equipment and supplies for midwifery skills laboratories. UNFPA also actively supports the National Midwifery Association in its mission to enhance maternal and neonatal care across the country.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing maternal and newborn health in Timor-Leste, ensuring that future generations of midwives are well-trained, skilled, and supported to deliver life-saving care.
