President Horta receives Final Report from Timor-Leste Ambassador to Geneva

DILI, 17 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with former Ambassador Lurdes Bessa, who served as Timor-Leste’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, and Monaco, to receive her final report following the conclusion of her diplomatic mandate.

Ambassador Bessa completed her tenure on December 31, 2024, and provided a comprehensive overview of the mission’s achievements.

During the briefing, Ambassador Bessa outlined several significant milestones in Timor-Leste’s international relations, most notably the nation’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on August 30, 2024. She also highlighted Timor-Leste’s enhanced role in global diplomacy through Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão participation at the Human Rights Council, where the country has actively contributed to discussions on pressing world issues.

The meetings, coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Presidency of the Republic, reviewed various multilateral agreements and diplomatic initiatives. A particular highlight was the successful diplomatic event which showcased Timor-Leste’s progress through the g7+ framework and strengthened international partnerships.

Looking ahead, President Horta and Ambassador Bessa discussed strategic priorities for Timor-Leste’s continued diplomatic presence in Geneva, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum in international cooperation and following through on established agreements. The President expressed appreciation for Ambassador Bessa’s dedicated service and her role in advancing Timor-Leste’s interests on the global stage during her mandate.
