Billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader Aga Khan, 88, passed away peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, on Tuesday (04/02), surrounded by his family.

“Timor-Leste has sent a letter to express our deepest condolences on the passing of Aga Khan and expressed our solidarity with Khan’s family for the loss that they are experiencing,” said Minister Freitas on the sidelines of the UNDP and WFP Strategic Stakeholder Consultation, in Dili, today.

Freitas said that the death of the Aga Khan was a big loss to the world, considering him a huge force for good in the world.

“Aga Khan was an important figure, dedicating his life to improving the quality of life for the millions of unfavorable groups around the world,” Minister Freitas said.

Aga Khan became the spiritual leader of the world’s millions of Ismaili Muslims at age 20. Over the course of his mandate, he spent tens of millions of dollars for the development of local economies.

On 17 October 2024, the Government of Timor-Leste and Ismaili Imamat signed a cooperation protocol as part of the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão’s visit to Portugal.

The cooperation protocol was signed at the Diwan, the Ismaili Imamat’s headquarters in Lisbon, by Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, and Nazim Ahmad, Diplomatic Representative of the Ismaili Imamat to Portugal.

The agreement aims to strengthen relations and foster collaboration across various sectors, including international relations, diplomacy, social development, the economy, and culture.
