DILI, 19 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, on Tuesday launched a new policy initiative addressing global food insecurity, highlighting that an estimated 108 million people across 19 countries are currently living in acute food insecurity.

Horta emphasized that while sustainable development is crucial, immediate action is needed to help those facing urgent food security challenges.

During the launch ceremony, the Head of State stressed that evidence shows properly implemented social protection programs can transform lives and communities.

He highlighted Timor-Leste’s commitment through its government’s five-year program aimed at eliminating inequalities and child malnutrition, including improvements to the school feeding program.

“The President also detailed ongoing efforts to boost agricultural productivity in Timor-Leste, including new irrigation systems and partnerships with countries like China, Japan, Indonesia, and the United States to introduce new seeds and technologies,” Horta said in his remarks at the launch ceremony, at the Palace Nobre, Lahane, in Dili.

He called for support from ASEAN countries, Northeast Asian nations, Europe, and the Americas to embrace this initiative, emphasizing that the project requires relatively modest commitments when considering the potential impact.

Speaking about the partnership with UN agencies, particularly the World Food Program, the President emphasized the importance of addressing the complex, interconnected challenges of rural development, infrastructure, and food security.

He noted that social protection policies must consider individual vulnerabilities rather than applying one-size-fits-all solutions to poverty and marginalization.
