DILI, 06 March 2025 (TATOLI) – Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, will visit Timor-Leste to strengthen cooperation in food security.

Prime Minister Chinh’s visit will explore opportunities for Timorese citizens to gain technical skills and agricultural knowledge from Vietnam’s successful food production system to enhance domestic food security and reduce import dependency.

During his weekly meeting with President Jose Ramos Horta today, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão said that they had discussed the upcoming visit of Vietnam’s Prime Minister to Dili.

“During the meeting, PM Xanana Gusmão provided information about the future Vietnamese delegation visit, which will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in food security initiatives,” said in a statement.

The Prime Minister also briefed President Ramos-Horta on ongoing discussions with several other nations interested in expanding collaboration with Timor-Leste across various sectors, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Horta expressed support for these diplomatic initiatives, emphasizing that international cooperation remains vital for Timor-Leste’s continued development.

Last month, President Horta held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Chinh, on the sidelines of the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi.

During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their mutual political trust and discussed ways to enhance economic relations between the two countries, with the strengthening of bilateral ties being a priority for Timor-Leste in the context of its growing regional integration.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister highlighted important agreements already established, such as visa exemptions, while proposing labor certificates to facilitate Timorese workforce mobility.

Prime Minister Chính suggested that Timor-Leste should strengthen its sovereign fund to ensure more effective and sustainable management of economic resources.

The discussions also covered potential areas of cooperation, including Vietnam-led financial centers focused on innovation, food security, and Vietnamese expertise in rice production that could contribute to the development of Timor-Leste’s agricultural sector.

Horta praised Vietnam’s achievements and highlighted its position as a regional power with good diplomatic relations worldwide.
