Agreements for direct flight connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Dili to be announced soon

DILI, 11 March 2025 (TATOLI) – Malaysian Ambassador to Timor-Leste Amarjit Singh Sarjit Singh has confirmed that the finalization of agreements for direct flight connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Dili, with twice-weekly flights to be announced soon.

Ambassador Singh made the statement during his meeting with the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, at the Presidential Palace in Dili on Monday.

President Horta welcomed the development as a significant step for Timor-Leste’s international accessibility

In December 2024, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially announced that two of Malaysia’s low-cost airlines “Air Asia” and “Batik Air” would launch direct flights to Timor-Leste in 2025.

Prime Minister Ibrahim made the statement at the joint conference during Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão’s official visit to Malaysia.

“Batik Air will be flying soon early next year to Dili, Timor-Leste, and Air Asia will follow up soon afterwards,” said Prime Minister Ibrahim during the joint conference, in Kuala Lumpur, last year.

On june 2024, Timor-Leste’s Foreign Minister, Bendito Freitas, and Malaysian Transport Minister, Anthony Loke signed an Air Service Agreement.

This agreement aimed to enhance cooperation in air services and boost people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.
