DILI, 12 April 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Rui Manuel Hanjam presented his letter of credentials to the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The ceremony was held at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Hanjam conveyed to His Highness the President of the United Arab Emirates the greetings of the President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, and the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, along with their best wishes for continued progress and prosperity for His Highness’s leadership and the people of the UAE.
The President of the UAE emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries and reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste through bilateral ties.
The Ambassador of Timor-Leste to the UAE was joined by other newly appointed ambassadors from several countries, including Guatemala, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the Republic of South Sudan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Türkiye, Tuvalu, the State of Israel, the Republic of Panama, the Kingdom of Spain, the Republic of Chad, and Georgia.
His Highness welcomed the new ambassadors and wished them every success in their duties to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the UAE and their respective countries.
He also affirmed that the ambassadors would receive all necessary support from the relevant UAE authorities to facilitate their diplomatic work in the UAE.
The ceremony was attended by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Advisor to the UAE President; Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation; Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State; Dr. Ahmed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the President’s Office for Strategic Affairs and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office; and several senior official
On 7 February 2025, Ambassador Hanjam also presented the copy of his credentials to UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
On 15 October 2024, Rui Manuel Hanjam was sworn in by President Horta, as Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to UAE.
Ambassador Hanjam brings over two decades of experience in public service, economic development, and international relations to his new role. His distinguished career includes serving as Principal Adviser to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Culture (2018-2023), Vice Minister of Finance (2009-2012), and Vice Minister of Economy Development (2007-2009). Ambassador Hanjam has also worked extensively with regional and international organizations, including ASEAN, the World Bank, and various United Nations missions.
In his new capacity, Ambassador Hanjam will focus on enhancing bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and the UAE, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, human development, capacity building, economics, trade, and investment. He has pledged to promote Timor-Leste’s interests and foster stronger ties with the UAE, emphasizing economic development and exploring intensive investment cooperation between the two nations.
