President Ramos-Horta expresses solidarity with the Philippines following powerful earthquake in Mindanao

DILI, 10 June 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, has expressed profound sadness and heartfelt solidarity with the government and people of the Philippines, following the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao in the southern region of the Philippines, on 8 June 2026.

In an official letter to the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., dated 9 June 2026, President Ramos-Horta conveyed his deepest condolences for the loss of lives, numerous injuries, and significant material damage caused by the disaster.

Ramos-Horta said: “I wish to convey to Your Excellency, to the government and people of the Philippines, my deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity. I would be grateful if Your Excellency could convey to the families of the victims the expression of our deepest sympathy and sorrow. We also extend our wishes for a swift recovery to all those who were injured and express our solidarity with the communities affected by this tragedy.”

Timor-Leste is following with concern the efforts of Philippine authorities and emergency response teams to assist affected populations and restore normalcy to impacted areas.

President Ramos-Horta reaffirmed the strong bond of friendship between the two nations and expressed confidence that, guided by the spirit of resilience, courage, and unity that characterizes the Filipino people, the Philippines will overcome this difficult challenge.
