DILI, 15 April 2025 (TATOLI) – President Jose Ramos Horta and Timor-Leste Ambassador to the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), Laura Abrantes, discussed necessary preparations for the upcoming CPLP Summit of the Heads of State and Government. The summit is set to take place in Guinea-Bissau this July.
During the meeting, President Horta gave important instructions regarding Timor-Leste’s preparation for the summit.
Ambassador Abrantes said that Guinea-Bissau would succeed São Tomé and Príncipe in the two-year rotating presidency from 2025 to 2027 and will also host the next Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The summit, composed of the Heads of State and Government of CPLP member countries, is the highest body of the organization, responsible for defining and guiding its general policies and strategies.
It is recalled that on August 27, 2023, the President of the National Parliament, Maria Fernanda Lay, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, attended the 14th Conference of Heads of State and Government of CPLP, held in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Timor-Leste itself already hosted the conference once in 2014, bringing together international leaders from CPLP countries to attend the high-level meeting in the only Portuguese-speaking country in Asia, under the theme “The CPLP and Globalization.”
The CPLP was established on July 17th, 1996, in Lisbon and comprises nine member states (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste).
The CPLP member countries have a combined population of more than 284 million inhabitants, spread across the African, American, Asian, and European continents. Estimates suggest that the population of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries will exceed 387 million by 2050 and reach almost 487 million by 2100.
