DILI, 06 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, together with the Angolan Ambassador to Timor-Leste, José Andrade De Lemos, and accompanied by Timor-Leste’s Foreign Minister, Bendito Freitas, inaugurated the building of the Angolan Embassy in Timor-Leste.
The establishment of the Angolan Embassy in Dili marks a new chapter in strengthening relations between Timor-Leste and Angola, as it symbolizes the lasting friendship between the two Lusophone countries.
Ambassador Lemos said that the opening of the embassy represents a significant step in the growing rapprochement between the two countries, which will facilitate political, economic, diplomatic, and cultural exchanges.
He underscored Angola as a reliable partner, saying that the establishment of the embassy provides a space for diplomats of the two countries to work together toward shared goals.
President Horta emphasized that the establishment of the embassy will serve as an essential platform to enhance diplomatic engagement, promote cultural exchange, and boost economic cooperation.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration in areas such as agriculture, education, and energy, considered crucial for sustainable development and prosperity for both peoples.
Minister Freitas, who spoke on behalf of the Government, said that the opening of the Embassy signifies the strong historical, cultural, and political ties between the two countries.
Freitas further added that the Embassy is more than just a building—it’s a symbol of the lasting friendship between the two countries.
“The opening of this embassy represents a decisive step toward deepening our bilateral relations, which have been marked by shared values—from the struggle for independence to the defense of sovereignty, and the commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of our peoples,” Freitas emphasized.
Present at the event were Vice-Prime Minister and Minister Coordinator for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, Vice-President of the National Parliament Teresinha Viegas, President of the Court of Appeal Afonso Carmona, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, and local dignitaries.
