DILI, 07 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste will sign a Patient Transfer Agreement with Royal Darwin Hospital to support Timorese patients who require intensive medical treatment that is not available at the National Hospital.

Vice Prime Minister, Minister Coordinator for Social Affairs, and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino said that will allocate US$400,000 for the initiative.

He said that the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens in receiving adequate medical treatment overseas: “We continue to fund the treatment of patients abroad.”

The government of Timor-Leste sends patients abroad every year, especially those suffering from oncological and cardiovascular diseases as the country does not have adequate means to treat them.

In addition to patients suffering from oncological and heart problems, some patients have had to be transferred to overseas hospitals to undergo surgeries that can’t be performed here in the country.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health (MoH) through the National Health Service Support (DNSH) sent 347 patients to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore for medical treatment.
