DILI, 15 May 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos Horta, expressed his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Uruguay on the passing of former President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, José Alberto “Pepe” Mujica, an iconic figure in Latin American and global political history whose life and legacy continue to inspire millions.

In a formal letter of condolence addressed to Yamandú Orsi, President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, on May 14th, 2025, President Horta expressed his heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the People of Uruguay and President Mujica’s bereaved family in this moment of grief and national mourning.

Horta honored the remarkable legacy of President Mujica, describing him as “A man of unwavering convictions and a leader of remarkable courage, José Mujica journeyed through history as a symbol of resistance, simplicity, and humanism. His path — from revolutionary struggles and brutal imprisonment to the highest offices of the State — reflected a life devoted to social justice, democracy, and human dignity. His rejection of luxury and ostentation, his austere life in the countryside, and his enduring commitment to the most vulnerable made him a true Republican, a rare example of coherence between word and deed.”

The Head of State further noted that under Mujica’s leadership, Uruguay assumed a pioneering role in promoting civil rights, individual freedoms, and progressive public policies, earning respect and admiration worldwide. He emphasized that Mujica’s calm yet firm voice will remain alive as a beacon of clarity, humility, and hope for future generations.

In concluding his letter, President Ramos-Horta expressed his hope that the memory of President Mujica will continue to guide Uruguay and all of Latin America in their march toward more just, compassionate, and free societies.
