DILI, 20 May 2025 (TATOLI) – “Timor-Leste, in collaboration with the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C24), will convene a regional seminar on decolonization from May 21 to 23 in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste.
The seminar will bring together over 100 diplomats accredited to the UN in New York, along with representatives from Pacific nations.
President Horta, in his remarks today at the celebration of the restoration of independence at the Presidential Palace, described the event as a proud milestone coinciding with the 23rd anniversary of Timor-Leste’s restored independence.
Horta said that the presence of the diplomats reflects Timor-Leste’s unwavering commitment to the principles of self-determination and “completing the decolonization process in many territories still awaiting it.”
“The presence of such distinguished guests reinforces the recognition of Timor-Leste’s journey and its active voice within the United Nations, particularly regarding the promotion of the rights of peoples still under colonial administration,” said the President.
He said that as a country that experienced a long and hard-fought journey to independence, Timor-Leste offers a unique and powerful voice in global discussions on decolonization.
Horta emphasized the importance of solidarity and international cooperation, expressing hope that the seminar will “help strengthen the international momentum towards a world free from colonialism, where all peoples can fully exercise their right to freedom, dignity, and the choice of their own future.”
On March 12, 2025, Timor-Leste was announced by the C24 as the host of the 2025 Pacific Regional Seminar.
In response, the government expressed its gratitude to the Chair, Members of the Bureau, Members of the Committee, and Observers, for the trust placed in Timor-Leste to host the 2025 Pacific Regional Seminar.
