DILI, 04 June 2025 (TATOLI) – Ahead of World Food Safety Day, WHO and key ministries—Health, Economic Affairs, Finance, Agriculture, Trade, and Industry—alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Representatives of the Vice Prime Minister office, held a multisectoral consultation on Timor-Leste’s Draft Food Law. The consultation workshop was held today at Larigutu Hall, CNE, in Dili.
“The meeting gathered stakeholder feedback to align the law with national priorities, clarify institutional roles, and ensure legal consistency,” WHO said in a statement.
The consultation builds on earlier efforts to enhance food safety, including the inaugural Food Control System Assessment led by the Ministry of Health and an INSPTL/WHO study exposing the growing prevalence of unhealthy food environments.
A strong national food law safeguards health and secures public trust in what people eat daily, according to WHO.
Timor-Leste will join the world in celebrating World Food Safety Day on June 7, promoting awareness and action to tackle foodborne risks and support public health, trade, and sustainability.
This year’s World Food Safety Day is celebrated under the theme ‘Food Safety: Science in Action,’ emphasizing the vital role of science in ensuring safe food and saving lives.
Every year, 600 million people fall sick as a result of around 200 different types of foodborne illness. The burden of such illness falls most heavily on the poor and on the young. In addition, foodborne illness is responsible for 420 000 preventable deaths every year,” According to Codex Alimentarius.
