DILI, 07 June 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic José Ramos Horta has called for an end to irresponsible garbage disposal practices in Timor-Leste, warning of their devastating impact on marine ecosystems and national food security.
President Horta made the appeal during Ocean Parade 2025, an environmental and cultural initiative held on Saturday, May 7, 2025, in Dili, which he hailed as a powerful platform for civic education and environmental awareness.
The Head of State warned about the serious consequences of marine pollution, specifically calling for an end to irresponsible garbage disposal, which is subsequently dragged by rain to the sea, causing the death of fish and the destruction of marine biodiversity.
Horta emphasized that ending improper waste disposal is not merely a matter of cleanliness, but a matter of national survival.
He reminded the public of the value of Timor-Leste’s marine resources such as high-quality fish and coral reefs, warning that these could disappear if they are not properly protected.
Horta also urged citizens to protect the country’s forests and wildlife and called on schools to become more actively involved in environmental stewardship. He encouraged the establishment of school gardens and orchards, highlighting their dual benefits of improving student nutrition and contributing to environmental health.
The President congratulated the Government for organizing the Ocean Parade and Gastronomy Fair, and called for the continuity of public awareness efforts for environmental protection.
The Ocean Parade 2025 continues through the weekend, with exhibitions, cultural performances, and community clean-up efforts designed to foster public engagement in sustainable living and marine conservation.
